Four hundred steps through the forest
The town's signature hike climbs to the Cuauhtinchan archaeological site, known locally as the hill of the idols. Around 400 steps cut through dense forest to a group of Mexica temples carved straight out of the rock of the hill.
It is one of the few monolithic temples preserved in the world and, from the top, gives the best panoramic view of Malinalco and its valley. Go early, and bring water and comfortable shoes.

Canyons, waterfalls and rappelling
Malinalco's canyons combine rivers, waterfalls and rock walls, with routes of different difficulty levels, for first-timers and experienced adventurers alike.
They are done with a guide and safety gear, rappelling beside waterfalls and wading through stretches of water. If it is your first time, a local operator will tell you which route suits you.
